Hello, thanks in advance. I am having a problem with a computer wanting to save excel files 'copy of' due to it being a read only file. When I open the properties of the file before I open it, the check box for read only is unchecked so I believe it should be good to go there. Also in the title bar, next to the file name it does not say anything about the file being 'read only'. The only place that it informs me is when I actually go to hit save under the original file name. I have made sure that the files in the folder of the computer that is sharing it has its read-only box unchecked as well.

Any advice would be greatly helpful. I have tried changing the protected view in the trust center with no avail. Also I tried disabling the preview pain as JamminJoe suggested (didnt work either). Any other suggestions would be appreciated. I know it is kind of hard without being able to have it in front of you.

What originally caused the problem was this. When I first started in this office. Their file system was set up on a external hard drive which was connected as a lettered drive which was being shared from one computer to another, with the backup of the hard drive just being copied and pasted to the C drive of the main computer (makes no sense to me but this is how it was set up). How to get mac to stop asking for update?. This would do no good as backup because if it was ever infected both the information stored on the C drive as a backup and the external would both be infected.

So what I did was copied the information from the hard drive and made a folder for it on the C drive of the main computer, and shared it onto the network. Then took the external and disconnected it.

Ever since then I have had this problem (only a couple of days). I think I have the permissions set correctly. Free photo enhancement apps for mac book.

Office 365 is a web-based subscription service that gives you anywhere-access to MS Office tools and applications, such as Word, Excel, Access, Publisher, PowerPoint and Outlook. Re: O365 Groups - Read Only Files are opening up in Edit mode great idea - I'm in (next week is better) I'm currently out of the office and would like for my colleague @DeletedUser_6884 to me included.

I was able to click ok after Central was selected without having to click ok for the error message. I also tried to run KB942763 which is the most recent time zone update available for XP and was told that I already have a more recent version installed. I'm running XP Pro SP3 and Outlook 2003. Outlook for mac update history. The message is 'The latest time zone definitions were not detected on this machine. Please visit Windows Update to install the latest time zone definitions and then run this tool.'

Just a quick update and answers to your questions. I can save new files OK. Also just one computer. It is only one computer sharing with one other computer.

Running office 2016/365. Also malware bytes and windows defender for antivirus. Have found that if I open the file, and use the 'save' button. It saves and overwrites the original file no problem. For some reason I am only getting the read only error when I use the 'save as' button, then it wants me to use the 'copy of' in the file name and wont let me save it as the original filename. It makes no sense to me as I have never ran across an issue like this before. I can at least work with that but it was really throwing me for a loop.

Let me know if you have any ideas.

Protected view is a new security feature for all Office documents which arrive in email or are downloaded from Internet sources. This is a security sandbox used by Office 2010 to enhance attachment security. Administrators will be able to control whether all email attachments or only those from outside their Exchange network use Protected view. How it works: When an emailed (or downloaded) document is opened, a red band appears at the top of the document to alert the user that the document is in protected view and cannot be edited. If the user trusts the document, they click the Enable editing button to begin editing. All attachments are read-only. When a document that was previously attached to an email (or downloaded from the Internet) is opened, the red message bar states 'This file originated as an email attachment ' or 'This file was downloaded from the Internet'.

The application knows this because Windows uses the Attachment Execution Service to place a zone identifier in an alternate data stream of the file which indicates it was downloaded from the Internet Zone. When Word, Excel, or PowerPoint opens the file and sees this marker it knows to open the file within Protected View and the user sees the red bar. This setting opens all Office documents in a read-only state and you need to click a button before you can edit the document. (To save the document, you'll need to use Save as - see ' if you want to save documents back to the email message.) To change the Protected view setting, you need to make the change in each Office application. Go to the File, Options Trust Center dialog and select Protected View. Disable the option to enable it for Outlook attachments. (You may also want to disable it for files originating from the Internet.) Once you do this, you'll get the Open/Save dialog, which can be disabled by editing the registry.
